Texas teen Michael John Riley Jr dies from brain-eating amoeba illness

Monday, August 31, 2015 Add Comment

The teenager who fell ill after a swimming outing earlier this month with his high school track teammates has died.

The family of Michael John Riley Jr. announced that the 14-year-old died after contracting a lethal disease caused by a brain-eating amoeba after swimming in the warm waters at Sam Houston State Park.

"It is with a heavy heart that we tell you, Michael John Riley Jr. lost his battle on this earth but won a victory for his place in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ," according to the family's Facebook post. "Michael fought a courageous fight over the past week, allowing him to move on to be with the Lord for future heavenly tasks, a beautiful set of wings, and a pair of gold running shoes."

The family vows to honor Riley's legacy by supporting scientific efforts to better understand primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (or PAM, as it's better known) along with an awareness campaign to prevent others from contracting the disease.

PAM is caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba which flourishes in warm water. Children who play in freshwater lakes or rivers are typically the most commonly affected.

"They get water up their nose with those organisms in there," Dr. Luis Ostrosky, medical director of epidemiology at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and UT Health, told the Houston Chronicle last week. "They start invading the nasal tissues. They basically go all the way to the brain and you get a brain infection."

The amoeba, which normally feeds on bacteria, begins to multiply which causes the brain to swell. Victims usually die within seven to 10 days.

One of the difficulties of treating PAM is that it is rare. During the past five decades, there haven't been more than eight cases a year in the United States.

However, Texas Children's treated another patient for PAM three week before it treated Riley. That patient did not survive either.

Riley got sick a few days after swimming in a freshwater lake at Sam Houston State Park with his new Cy-Ridge High School track team on Aug. 13.

At first, doctors didn't know what was wrong with the accomplished long-distance runner. His headaches, however, continued to worsen and, a few days later, became unbearable. His neck was painfully stiff and he became disoriented.

But a physician at Texas Children's Hospital-West Campus recognized the symptoms from another case he had seen and Riley was transferred to the Texas Medical Center. A 2013 case from Arkansas gave the Riley family hope as well as a guide to treatment methods because that patient, who had contracted the disease from a water park, was one of only two U.S. survivors.

Doctors put Riley in an induced coma and monitored his brain activity.

But Saturday night, the test results weren't good, according to the family's Facebook post.

"Family and friends from all over the world have shown tremendous support both in presence and from far distances," according to the family. "Our family continues to find comfort in your prayers and love, please keep them coming. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your outpouring of love."

Funeral services will be announced later, according to the family.

Sepp Blatter, Under Investigation in US, to Resign as FIFA President

Tuesday, June 02, 2015 Add Comment

FIFA president Sepp Blatter is being investigated by US officials as part of their inquiry into corruption at the world football body, US media say.

The news came hours after Mr Blatter announced that he was stepping down from his role. US prosecutors launched a criminal inquiry last week, with seven Fifa officials arrested in Switzerland, part of a group of 14 people indicted.

Two days after the arrests, Mr Blatter was re-elected president of Fifa. However, he said on Tuesday that it appeared the mandate he had been given "does not seem to be supported by everyone in the world".

Mr Blatter said: "Fifa needs profound restructuring."

'Bribes and kickbacks'

US officials quoted in the New York Times said they hoped to gain the co-operation of some of the Fifa figures now under indictment on charges of racketeering and money laundering to try to build a case against Mr Blatter.

In announcing the indictments last week, the US Attorney General Loretta Lynch insisted that they were at the beginning of their investigation rather than the end. She also called - just days before Sepp Blatter's re-election for a fifth term as president - for Fifa to make a new start.

It is primarily the American investigation that has plunged the world's governing body into the most serious crisis in its history.

Earlier the FBI, Internal Revenue Service and the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who is involved in the US prosecutions, all said they would not comment on the Blatter resignation.
In its prosecution, the US justice department said 14 individuals were under investigation worldwide for allegedly accepting bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£97m) over a 24-year period.

Two vice-presidents were among the seven Fifa officials arrested in Zurich. They all await US extradition proceedings.

Brazilian footballing legend Pele told the BBC that the developments surrounding Fifa and Sepp Blatter "surprised everyone".

"My position is like a player. I want to see football put people together, stop the war," he said.
"Fifa needs honest people."

The arrests overshadowed the vote for a new president, which Mr Blatter won, defeating his sole challenger, Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan.
Prince Ali withdrew despite forcing a second round, having lost the first by 133 votes to 73.

Announcing his exit on Tuesday, 79-year-old Mr Blatter called an extraordinary Fifa congress "as soon as possible" to elect a new president. The Swiss, who has been Fifa president since 1998, said: "The next ordinary Fifa congress will take place on 13 May, 2016 in Mexico City.

"This would create unnecessary delay and I will urge the executive committee to organise an extraordinary congress for the election of my successor at the earliest opportunity.
"This will need to be done in line with Fifa's statutes and we must allow enough time for the best candidates to present themselves and to campaign."

The extraordinary congress is expected to take place between December 2015 and March 2016.
Further allegations of corruption emerged on Tuesday with claims that Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke was linked to an alleged $10m (£6m) payment of bribes over South Africa's bid to host the 2010 World Cup. He denies any wrongdoing.

A separate criminal investigation by Swiss authorities into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allocated is also under way.

Various photo displays Rohingya migrants, and Bangladesh, which was saved from wooden boats that float in the middle of the sea towards the coast of Southeast Asia have sparked calls for humanitarian action to address this crisis.

Putin slams US Intervention in FIFA's Officials Arrests

Thursday, May 28, 2015 Add Comment

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (28/5), criticized the United States on charges of corruption filed by the US against the FIFA officials, citing the case of the US effort to extend its jurisdiction to other countries.

Putin, in his commentary on television said the US also tried to prevent the election of the FIFA president Sepp Blatter. Elections are scheduled to take place Friday in which Blatter will face a competitor in an attempt fifth term of office.

Russia will host the World Cup in 2018.

Putin statement similar to the messages conveyed Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, describing the case as the application of American law outside the legal territory.

America has been no response due to Putin's statement. Providing the opportunity for Russia to host the 2018 World Cup, is part of a Swiss investigation into allegations of mismanagement and money laundering

FIFA High rank officials arrested on corruption charges by The US Attorney General

Wednesday, May 27, 2015 Add Comment

US prosecutors have accused several officials from football's governing body Fifa of racketeering, fraud and money laundering involving tens of millions of dollars over 24 years. Prosecutors said they had discovered a dozen schemes, including one awarding the 2010 World Cup to South Africa.

Fourteen people have been indicted, with seven held in Zurich on Wednesday. Fifa president Sepp Blatter is not among them. Fifa still intends to hold its presidential election on Friday.
However, European football body Uefa has called for the election to be postponed and said it could boycott the congress.

Mr Blatter is seeking re-election and is favoured to win a fifth term.
Swiss prosecutors have also opened a separate investigation into the bidding process for the World Cup tournaments in 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

'Over and over'
Those indicted in the US case are accused of accepting bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£97m) over a 24-year period beginning in 1991. One of the seven arrested in Zurich is Jeffrey Webb, current Fifa vice-president and head of the Concacaf federation that serves North and Central America. Six of the seven are contesting extradition to the US, Swiss authorities say.

Former Fifa vice president Jack Warner of Trinidad and Tobago, who was not one of those held in Switzerland, is accused of soliciting $10m in bribes from South Africa's government over the hosting of the 2010 World Cup. Mr Warner issued a statement saying he was innocent of any charges.
If convicted on racketeering charges, the defendants could face up to 20 years in prison.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said some Fifa executives had "used their positions to solicit bribes. They did this over and over, year after year, tournament after tournament".

"They corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and to enrich themselves."
Ms Lynch said the charges included:

-Receiving bribes to receive media and marketing rights to football tournaments
-Receiving bribes to influence the decision of where tournaments should be hosted - including the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and the 2016 Copa America in the US
-Racketeering - organised illegal activity
-Money laundering
-Wre fraud - or obtaining money by fraudulent means

Ms Lynch said the forthcoming Fifa election had played no part in the timing of the indictments, and that although Fifa had a "lot of soul searching to do", US law officials were not looking to have "an impact on the decisions" Fifa needed to make in the future.

However, Acting US Attorney for New York eastern district Kelly Currie warned this was the "beginning, not the end, of the investigation". Four individuals and two companies have already pleaded guilty. But the US officials said there were no allegations that any football matches were affected by the alleged corruption.

Many have wondered how Sepp Blatter can have been in charge of Fifa for so long amid so many reports of corruption and yet remain, apparently, untouched.

One Swiss newspaper jokingly called him "the dark prince of football, the godfather, Don Blatterone" - but no inquiry has ever revealed proof of his involvement in corruption.

Some old friends describe Mr Blatter as down-to-earth and open. Others who have worked with him say he is a man who resents opposition, pointing to the swift departure of Fifa colleagues who dared to question him.

What emerges, finally, is a man who both critics and supporters say cannot imagine his life without Fifa, a man whose tenure as president has outlasted three marriages. Fifa earlier said it welcomed the process and insisted that the vote to elect its next president would go ahead on Friday.

In the second case, Swiss prosecutors opened criminal proceedings "against persons unknown on suspicion of criminal mismanagement and of money laundering in connection with the allocation of the 2018 and 2022 football World Cups".

Swiss police said they would question 10 Fifa executive committee members who participated in the votes that selected Russia and Qatar in December 2010. Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said the investigation would not affect its hosting of the 2018 event, telling Associated Press: "We've got nothing to hide." The Russian foreign ministry added that the US investigation appeared to be an "illegal extraterritorial application" of US law.

Here is the list of soccer officials who were named in the indictment:

· Jeffrey Webb: Current FIFA vice president and executive committee member, CONCACAF president, Caribbean Football Union (CFU) executive committee member and Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) president.

· Eduardo Li: Current FIFA executive committee member-elect, CONCACAF executive committee member and Costa Rican soccer federation (FEDEFUT) president.

· Julio Rocha: Current FIFA development officer. Former Central American Football Union (UNCAF) president and Nicaraguan soccer federation (FENIFUT) president.

· Costas Takkas: Current attaché to the CONCACAF president. Former CIFA general secretary.

· Jack Warner: Former FIFA vice president and executive committee member, CONCACAF
president, CFU president and Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special adviser.

· Eugenio Figueredo: Current FIFA vice president and executive committee member. Former CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) president and Uruguayan soccer federation (AUF) president.

· Rafael Esquivel: Current CONMEBOL executive committee member and Venezuelan soccer federation (FVF) president.

· José Maria Marin: Current member of the FIFA organizing committee for the Olympic football tournaments. Former CBF president.

· Nicolás Leoz: Former FIFA executive committee member and CONMEBOL president.

ISIS reportedly executed 400 people in Palmyra including women and children

Sunday, May 24, 2015 Add Comment

Iraqi forces recaptured territory from advancing Islamic State militants near the recently-fallen city of Ramadi on Sunday, while in Syria the government said the Islamists had killed hundreds of people since capturing the town of Palmyra.

The fall of Ramadi and Palmyra, on opposite ends of the vast territory controlled by Islamic State fighters, were the militant group's biggest successes since a U.S.-led coalition launched an air war to stop them last year.

The near simultaneous victories against the Iraqi and Syrian armies have forced Washington to examine its strategy, which involves bombing from the air but leaving fighting on the ground to local forces in both countries.

In a sharp criticism of Washington's ally, U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter accused Iraq's army of abandoning Ramadi, a provincial capital west of Baghdad, to a much smaller enemy force.

"The Iraqi forces just showed no will to fight," he told CNN's State of the Union program. "They vastly outnumbered the opposing force, and yet they withdrew from the site."

Iraq's government, along with Iran-backed Shi'ite militiamen and locally-recruited Sunni tribal fighters, launched a counter-offensive on Saturday, a week after losing Ramadi. A police major and a pro-government Sunni tribal fighter in the area said they had retaken the town of Husaiba al-Sharqiya, about 10 km (6 miles) east of Ramadi.

"Today we regained control over Husaiba and are laying plans to make more advances to push back Daesh fighters further,” said local tribal leader Amir al-Fahdawi, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State, also known in English as ISIS or ISIL.

“The morale of the (pro-government) fighters is high after the arrival of reinforcements and loads of ammunition," Fahdawi said. "Today's advance will speed up the clock for a major advance to regain control of Ramadi."

Planes were bombing Islamic State positions on the opposite bank of the Euphrates river, where the militants were launching mortars and sniper fire to prevent the pro-government forces advancing, Fahdawi and the police major said.

MASS EXECUTIONS

Days after taking Ramadi, Islamic State also defeated forces of the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad to capture Palmyra, home to 50,000 people and site of some of the world's most extensive and best-preserved Roman ruins.

The fighters have killed at least 400 people, including women and children in Palmyra since capturing the ancient Syrian city four days ago, Syrian state media said on Sunday.

It was not immediately possible to verify that account, but it was consistent with reports by activists that the Islamist fighters had carried out executions, leaving hundreds of bodies in the streets.

The Sunni Muslim militants have proclaimed a caliphate to rule over all Muslims from territory they hold in both Syria and Iraq. They have a history of carrying out mass killings in towns and cities they capture, and of dynamiting and bulldozing ancient monuments, which they consider evidence of paganism.

"The terrorists have killed more than 400 people ... and mutilated their bodies, under the pretext that they cooperated with the government and did not follow orders," Syria's state news agency said, citing residents inside the city.

Many of those killed were state employees, including the head of the nursing department at the hospital and all her family members, it said.

Islamic State supporters have posted videos on the Internet they say show fighters going room to room in Palmyra's government buildings, searching for hiding troops and pulling down pictures of Assad and his father.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in the country with a network of sources on the ground, says beheadings have taken place in the town since it fell but has not given an estimate for the toll among civilians.

It says at least 300 soldiers were killed in the days of fighting before the city was captured.

"A bigger number of troops have disappeared and it is not clear where they are," Rami Abdulrahman from the Observatory told Reuters.

He won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1994 for his work in game theory, which offered insight into the dynamics of human rivalry. It is considered one of the most influential ideas of the 20th century.

On May 19, Nash was in Oslo where he received the Abel Prize, a prestigious international math award. The King of Norway presented the award to Nash and a co-recipient, fellow math whiz, Louis Nirenberg.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters called the two "mathematical giants of the 20th century" who made breakthroughs that have become "essential tools for the study of nonlinear partial differential equations.

Nirenberg said he'd chatted with the couple for an hour at the airport in Newark before they'd gotten a cab. Nirenberg said Nash was a truly great mathematician and "a kind of genius."

"We were all so happy together," Nirenberg said. "It seemed like a dream."

"We are stunned and saddened by news of the untimely passing of John Nash and his wife and great champion, Alicia," Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement Sunday. "Both of them were very special members of the Princeton University community. John's remarkable achievements inspired generations of mathematicians, economists and scientists who were influenced by his brilliant, groundbreaking work in game theory, and the story of his life with Alicia moved millions of readers and moviegoers who marveled at their courage in the face of daunting challenges."

John David Stier, Nash's son with his first wife, said he learned of the death Sunday morning. "It's very upsetting," he said.

In an autobiography written for The Nobel Foundation Web site, Nash said delusions caused him to resign as a faculty member at M.I.T. He also spent several months in New Jersey hospitals on an involuntary basis.

However, Nash's schizophrenia diminished through the 1970s and 1980s as he "gradually began to intellectually reject some of the delusionally influenced lines of thinking," he wrote.

The 2001 film "A Beautiful Mind" won four Oscars, including best picture and best director, and generated interest in John Nash's life story. The movie was based on an unauthorized biography by Sylvia Nasar, who wrote that Nash's contemporaries found him "immensely strange" and "slightly cold, a bit superior, somewhat secretive."

Much of his demeanor likely stemmed from mental illness, which began emerging in 1959 when Alicia was pregnant with a son. The film, though, did not mention Nash older son or to the years that he and Alicia spent living together after divorcing. The couple split in 1963, then resumed living together several years later and finally remarried in 2001.

Born in Bluefield, W. Va., to an electrical engineer and a housewife, Nash had read the classic "Men of Mathematics" by E.T. Bell by the time he was in high school. He planned to follow in his father's footsteps and studied for three years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (now Carnegie Mellon University), but instead developed a passion for mathematics.

He then went to Princeton, where he worked on his equilibrium theory and, in 1950, received his doctorate with a dissertation on non-cooperative games. The thesis contained the definition and properties of what would later be called the Nash equilibrium.

Nash then taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for several years and held a research post at Brandeis University before eventually returning to Princeton.

Nico Rosberg win at Monaco F1 GP

Sunday, May 24, 2015 Add Comment

Mercedes fell on their three-pointed star here as they took responsibility for the pit stop misjudgment that cost Lewis Hamilton a straightforward victory in the Monaco Grand Prix. “We got the math wrong – we got the calculations wrong,” their head of motorsport, Toto Wolff said. “There is nothing else to do than apologise to Lewis. It was a misjudgment in the heat of the moment.”

The forlorn-looking Formula One world champion muttered: “I can’t really express the way I’m feeling at the moment so I won’t attempt to. To be honest it happened so fast I don’t remember. You rely on your team.”

The blunder allowed Nico Rosberg to complete a straight hat-trick of wins at the famous street circuit, the fourth man to do so after Graham Hill, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. The German also halved Hamilton’s world championship lead from 20 points to 10, because the British driver ended up third behind Sebastian Vettel.

Monaco Grand Prix: F1 – as it happened
Rolling report: An ill-judged pit-stop by Mercedes allowed Nico Rosberg to overtake Lewis Hamilton and win his third straight Monaco Grand Prix
Read more
It looked like yet another Monotony Grand Prix as Hamilton sprinted away from his pole position to build up what looked like an impregnable advantage. For 63 of the 78 laps there seemed only one winner. Hamilton was poised to make it four victories out of six this year and extend his advantage over Rosberg from 20 points to 27.

But then Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen, who had been the most eye-catching driver at Formula One’s biggest weekend of the year, crashed into the back of Romain Grosjean’s Lotus at Sainte Dévote, on the 64th lap, and the race would never be the same. The virtual safety car was implemented for the first time in F1, as yellow flags were waved to slow down the cars, and then the real safety car came out. At this point Hamilton had a lead of 25.4 seconds. He was called into the pits by the team, to change his soft tyres to the super-soft compound.

But his entry to the pit lane was held up and when he did take on new rubber the operation took four seconds, hardly the quickest. When he returned to the track he found himself behind not only Rosberg but also Vettel.

Immediately, he knew he had lost the race. Even with fresh tyres overtaking is heart-achingly difficult here and he had only eight laps to get past the other two; in the end he settled for the consolation of 15 points. “It’s the luckiest victory I’ve had, I feel for Lewis,” Rosberg said.

Wolff added: “We thought we had a gap which we didn’t have, when the safety car came out and Lewis was behind the safety car. The calculation was simply wrong. That’s what happened.

“This was the team’s decision. We are all in this together. We make decisions together. There is not one person to blame. We win and we lose together.”

But why did Mercedes take the gamble? Hamilton had the race won. Track position is everything at Monaco and there is always the chance that a pit stop can go awfully wrong. Wolff explained: “There was a potential risk that Sebastian could have switched to soft tyres behind us, coming up behind Nico. We have to follow the data. This is how the sport works. But the simple answer is the numbers were wrong.”

Hamilton received the message to come in when he was 50 metres away from the pit entrance. “The decision was made jointly with a lot of information at the same time within a fraction of seconds,” Wolff said.

“You need to make a call and you try to get as much input as possible from the engineers, from the management, from the driver and then take a decision. The algorithm was wrong.”

Although the team must take the ultimate responsibility – and they did – Hamilton also had a say in the decision-making process, because he had a dialogue with them.

Later, Hamilton said: “I saw a screen and it looked like the team was out [in the pits]. It looked like Nico had pitted. I thought the guys behind were pitting, so when the team said stay out, I said the tyres were dropping temperature, and I was assuming that these guys would be on options and I would be on the harder tyre, so they said to pit. I did that and came in thinking with full confidence the others had done the same.”

Hamilton was looking for his first win here since his championship-winning year of 2008. He was desperate for success on a circuit only a few hundred yards away from where he lives.

He said: “This race has been close to my heart for many years. It was a great feeling in the race, I had so much pace. I didn’t have to push too much. I could have doubled the lead if I needed. I’m grateful for that pace and I’ll come back to fight another day – at the moment I can’t think of anything else.”

Hamilton got off to a good start, which was more than matched by Rosberg but not by enough to get past. Vettel also hung on to third and Daniil Kvyat’s pass on his Red Bull colleague only to take fourth was the only change among the leaders on the opening lap.

Hamilton had a lead of 1.5 seconds after two laps and after 10 laps it was 3.5 seconds. It was all over. But that was before Mercedes inflicted grievous wounds on themselves.

Gunfight between Mexican Authorities and Drugs Cartel, 43 dead

Saturday, May 23, 2015 Add Comment

By Alexandra Alper

ZAMORA, Mexico, May 22 (Reuters) - Government security forces killed 43 suspected drug cartel henchmen and suffered one fatality in a firefight in western Mexico on Friday, an official said, one of the bloodiest shootouts in a decade of gang violence wracking the country.

National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said one federal policeman died and another was injured in the three hour battle on a ranch just inside the Michoacan state border with Jalisco, home of Guadalajara, Mexico's second-biggest city.

The death toll was one of the heaviest to hit Mexico since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December 2012 pledging to put an end to years of gangland violence that have claimed more than 100,000 lives since 2007 alone.

Government officials said the 42 killed by security forces near the town of Tanhuato were suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation (JNG) cartel, a gang based in the neighboring state that has seriously undermined Pena Nieto's pledge.

The gunfight began after security forces alerted to an "invasion" of the ranch approached the 112 hectare property and were fired upon by a group of armed men, Rubido said.

After calling in air and ground support, government forces ground down their opponents with the aid of a helicopter, in the end capturing three suspected gang members and seizing a grenade launcher and 39 guns of varying calibers, he added.

Earlier, a government official told Reuters that two federal police had died in the exchanges near Tanhuato, where a week ago, federal forces replaced local police after the assassination of a candidate for mayor in a nearby town.

Rubido said officials from the national human rights commission (CNDH) had been sent to the ranch, where the number of dead was the highest in any clash between the government and suspected gangsters since a controversial incident last June.

Then, the government first reported that 22 gang members were killed in a shootout with soldiers in central Mexico. However, subsequent investigations showed that more than half of the dead had been executed, embarrassing the government.

ELECTION LOOMS

Jalisco is one of the engines of the Mexican economy, but the state's southern border turned into a battleground between the JNG and the Michoacan-based Knights Templars, a gang whose leadership has been shattered over the past 18 months.

Capitalizing on the Templars' losses, the JNG has become the biggest threat to the government, killing at least 20 police since March. On May 1, its gunmen shot down an army helicopter in southwestern Jalisco, claiming the lives of six military personnel.

The gang also set vehicles, banks and gas stations ablaze around Guadalajara in a series of concerted attacks that day, shaking confidence in the federal government's ability to contain the violence ahead of mid-term elections on June 7.

Pena Nieto's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party hopes to defend the slim majority it and its allies have in the lower house of Congress, with polls suggesting it could. ISIS claims suicide bomb attacks over Shiite mosque in Saudi, killing 21 people

Friday, May 22, 2015 Add Comment

An Islamic State (IS) suicide bomber has attacked a Shiite mosque in Sunni-ruled eastern Saudi Arabia, killing 21 people.

The bomber struck during the main weekly prayers in the eastern province, where assailants linked to the Sunni extremist IS group killed seven members of the minority Shiite community in November.

"An individual detonated a bomb he was wearing under his clothes during Friday prayers at Ali Ibn Abi Taleb mosque in Kudeih in Qatif province," an interior ministry spokesman said in a statement.

Twelve people were in critical condition after the attack, with another 69 people wounded, the health ministry said.

In a statement published online, IS said it was behind the bombing — the first time the group has officially claimed an attack in Saudi Arabia.

It named the bomber as Abu Amer al-Najdi and included a picture of him.

The statement said "the soldiers of the caliphate" were behind the attack by a suicide bomber "who detonated an explosives belt" in the mosque.

It also pledged "dark days ahead" for Shiites until militants "chase them from the Arabian Peninsula".

News websites in eastern Saudi Arabia posted photographs of bodies lying in pools of blood.

Qatif hospital issued an urgent call for blood donations after the attack and called in off-duty staff to cope with the high number of casualties, one Shiite activist said.

Naseema Assada, a resident of Qatif, said worshippers were celebrating the birth of revered Shiite Imam Hussein when the blast occurred.

"The people are very angry," she said, adding that they tried to stop police from entering the Kudeih area.

She said residents had feared such an attack was coming because the government was failing to curb hate speech on social media against the Shiite community.

"We don't want a repeat of what is happening in Syria or Iraq here. This is our country and we love it," she said.

The mufti of Saudi Arabia, the highest-ranking Sunni cleric, denounced the attack in a statement broadcast on state television.

"It is a criminal act aimed at dividing the sons of the nation ... and at sowing trouble in our country," he said.

The attack comes as a Saudi-led coalition has since March 26 been bombing Shiite rebels in Yemen who have overrun much of the country and forced the government to flee abroad.

Analysts said radical Sunnis in the ultra-conservative kingdom consider Saudi Shiites to be allies of the Yemen Houthi rebels.

"This (attack) was unfortunately only a matter of time," Gulf analyst at the US-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Frederic Wehrey said.

Shiites have not joined in the "wave of Sunni nationalism" that has followed the Saudi-led campaign against the rebels in Yemen, and are considered by radical Salafists as a "fifth column" for the Houthis.

The interior ministry spokesman said Saudi Arabia would "hunt down anyone involved in this terrorist crime carried out by people seeking to undermine national unity".

The website of Arryadh newspaper posted pictures showing bloodied prayer rugs and part of the ceiling of the mosque that had caved in.

First reports by witnesses said the suicide bomber appeared to be from Pakistan, but others said he was wearing traditional Afghan clothes.

Kudeih is in the oil-rich eastern province and is home to most of Saudi Arabia's minority Shiite community, which has long complained of marginalisation in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.

Saudi police have made a string of arrests in recent months of Sunni extremists suspected of plotting attacks aimed at stirring sectarian unrest in the eastern province.

Last November, gunmen killed seven Shiites, including children, in the eastern town of Al Dalwa during the commemoration of Ashura, one of the holiest occasions of their faith.

Four men carried out the attack after killing a man from a neighbouring village and stealing his car to use in the shootings, the interior ministry said.

In April, authorities said they arrested 93 jihadists, including 62 suspected of links to the IS group who were plotting attacks to "incite sectarian sedition".

Since 2011, protests and sporadic attacks on security forces have taken place in Shiite area.

Following France, The Netherlands bans Wear Veil in Public Places

Friday, May 22, 2015 Add Comment

Dutch government agreed to ban the use of partially veil on the face, including the burqa, in public places. Dutch Interior Ministry announced the agreement in a statement on Friday (22/5).

Previously, the rule was a new form of the proposal. Must be approved by parliament before it becomes law must be adhered to the entire community in the Netherlands. Now the government has approved the ban.

The ban was not associated with any particular religion. Regulations will be applied not only for Muslims who often wear the burqa, but also the whole veil that cover the face.

In the proposals, prohibition also applies to any use of clothing, including ski masks and helmets if they are in public places such as schools, hospitals, and government offices etc.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said, "In a free country such as the Netherlands, everyone has a right to dress as they want, no matter what anybody else says. Freedom is only limited to the situation if it is very important for people to see each other."

Although there is an additional chapter that the rule was not looking at any particular religion, nonetheless veil synonymous with Muslim clothing. Muslim women who wear the hijab and niqab or burqa in the Netherlands the number was not much.

Although there are only a few hundred Muslim women who wear the hijab, Rutte reiterated that rule is necessary to enforce the Dutch's values society

Anti-Islamic opposition politician, Geert Wilders Dutch won widespread public support. According to him, the Netherlands has long been in need of a ban on wearing the veil.

Earlier, a similar prohibition has also been the case in France that prohibits veil on  since 2010, and was reaffirmed last year through the Court of Human Rights in Europe.

Secrets of the Super-Rich Investment: Why the Rich Stay Rich, they don’t invest like the rest

Friday, May 22, 2015 Add Comment

Why the rich stay rich or even increase their wealth? The secret is in their investments. Bryan Borzykowski learn their way.

Getting and staying rich...
When many of us have a little cash to invest, we might buy a mutual fund or a stock — if we don’t blow it on the latest tech gadget. Not the truly wealthy, however. They often put their money in property, art, businesses and other investments that the rest of us can only dream of owning. How this rarified group uses their cash differentiates them from the rest of us — and keeps them in the black.

Take Joshua Coleman, for example. When his family sold their Chicago-based telecom company for $400m in 2004, they didn’t run out and buy something extravagant. Instead, they began seeking advice on ways to save their newfound riches and help them grow.

Their quest sparked an idea for Coleman, now 27. In 2011, he launched Momentum Advanced Planning — a firm that connects people to tax, legal and wealth experts. If the business one day sells, he could see a big return, just like his family’s first business.

If you think that starting a business is an odd way to invest your money, then you probably aren’t among the ultra-wealthy. People who have at least $30m in assets — dubbed ultra high net-worth — invest in stocks and bonds, but they also grow their money by buying companies and investing in unusual securities, such as airline leasing funds. They also own art and cars that they hope will appreciate in value.

“It’s called alpha risk,” said Coleman. “It’s this kind of stuff where there can be a lot of upside.”

As for the downside, many of these investments are riskier than traditional investments, so there’s a higher chance of losing a large chunk of change. As well, they’re far less liquid than stocks and it could talk months or years for the wealthy to get their money out of an investment.

Even if you don’t have millions to invest, though, you can learn a thing or two about how the rich reap returns and apply it your own portfolios.

Rich-only investments? Perhaps...
The wealthy have access to a swath of investments that most people don’t even know exist.

Closed-end funds — a long-term investment where money is typically tied up for at least five years — offer the very rich access to big returns and high yields.

Aircraft leasing is one budding area of investment, said Ian Marsh, CEO of asset management for London-based Fleming Family and Partners, a wealth management firm that was initially created to preserve the fortune of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.

His clients work with a company called Doric, which uses investor money to buy planes which are leased to large airlines, such as Dubai-based Emirates Airlines.

Investors will eventually cash out of the fund when those planes are sold, but they can make a 9% annual yield in the meantime from the leases alone. The average yield on the Standard and Poor’s S&P 500 — America’s main investing benchmark stock basket — is about 3%.

Some closed-end funds require hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy in, but Doric’s airline leasing funds have a more reasonable entry fee, says Marsh. Its SKY CLOUD series of funds — which buy Airbus A380-800s and leases them to Emirates Airlines — have a minimum investment of 10,000 euro ($13,822) and 5% one-time fee that is based on how much investors put in.

Ultra high-net worth investors in the UK and elsewhere are also buying up farmland. As the global population grows, demand for food will also increase and those who own prime agricultural land could see good returns, said Marsh. Arable land is a finite resource —the harder something is to come by the better the return.

According to Marsh, good land can earn a yield of about 4% a year for an investor, plus appreciate in value over time. Few regular investors can afford to invest in a plane fund or buy a plot of rich farmland, but there are some more-accessible closed-end funds that offer a way to invest in global infrastructure, even wine. There are also some publicly listed companies that people can buy on the stock market. For instance, Gladstone Land is a US-listed company that buys farmland.

Buy more businesses, of course...
It’s a natural for wealthy individuals, many of whom made their money owning companies, to buy into other businesses. Coleman invests in a number of other companies, mostly in the professional services and tech sectors. He has a stake in so many operations that he can’t give an exact number.

“It’s a lot,” he said.

He’s usually investing with a group of investors and a private equity firm, and he’ll invest more than $1 million to get a piece of an operation.

It’s fun to see companies go from nothing to something and many investors have the experience and networks to help get a business off the ground, said David Rose, a New York-based ultra-wealthy entrepreneur and author of Angel Investing: The Gust Guide to Making Money and Having Fun in Startups.

“Imagine investing in Google when they were still in their trailer,” he said. “You can meet the founders on a weekly basis, get a first hand look at what’s happening and see it grow. That can be a lot of fun.”

It can also be lucrative. Though investors put their money at risk — 50% of startup companies go bust, said Rose — a wealthy investor usually makes 20 times to 50 times their initial investment on one or two companies that do succeed.
Rose usually puts between $50,000 and $100,000 in a company, and he said he has made millions off some of his investments.

At the moment, it’s difficult for the average investor to invest directly in a business, unless they hand over some money to a friend or family member, says Rose.

However, a new piece of US legislation, passed in 2012, may allow regular people to invest in startups. It’s not yet clear how this will play out.

Play up pricey passions...
“Passion” investments, such as art, cars, watches, wine and even musical instruments, are big among the rich, said Guy Hudson, executive director and head of business development at London’s Stonehage Investment Partners, a global wealth management firm.

While people want these assets to grow in value, they’re also buying them to either use or look at.

“These investments always arise from the investor’s passion for that particular object,” said Hudson.

For investors who buy the right passion investments — finding something rare is key here — they can see solid returns. According to his company’s research, the value of “investments of passion” rose by nearly 15% in 2013, said Hudson.

There are several ways for regular investors to buy passion investments, says Hudson. A wine fund sold by The Wine Investment Fund requires a minimum 10,000 euro ($13,822) investment, for instance, and there are other funds that focus on art and cars. Take note: some may require the investor to be accredited, so even if the initial fee is low, you may not be able to purchase the fund.

You can also buy art for affordable prices at auction. “Up and coming artists will sell their pieces at reasonable rates,” he said.

Fuelling a hunger for property...
Many high-net-worth people like parking their cash — often seven or eight figures — on pieces of property, said Paul Patterson, deputy chair at Toronto’s RBC Wealth Management.

Some pool their money with others to buy commercial properties; others scoop up high-priced condos in London, New York and other global locales.

Many hope to sell for a handsome profit, but in the meantime, they can live in these abodes when they travel, he said. “They typically buy two or three residences in different places around the world,” he said. “It’s got great long-term value, especially in core markets.”

While the average person likely won’t be able to buy a condo in a posh New York area, they may be able to buy a house in their neighborhood that they can then rent out or sell when the price appreciates.

There are also many public companies that buy commercial and residential real estate — called Real Estate Investment Trusts — that any stock market investor can purchase. While they’ll be sensitive to market ups and downs, the stocks often rise in price as rents and property values climb.

ISIS Seize Palmyra and control 50% of Syrian territory

Thursday, May 21, 2015 Add Comment

(ISIS) entered Palmyra, a city in the Syrian included in the UNESCO world heritage site.
With control of this city and its neighboring city of Tadmur, ISIS has taken over 50% of Syrian territory, according to the research organization Human Rights Watch Syria.

Tadmur city is important for ISIS, because there are large gas fields there, "said a researcher at the organization who identified himself as Ahmad.
"Actually ISIS now control almost the entire oil and gas fields in Syria. Only one gas field that has not been controlled by ISIS," he added.

This is the first time they managed to directly seize the town with densely populated, directly from the hands of pro-government troops. Until now, there has not reported the destruction of historic sites in Palmyra.

BBC correspondent in Beirut expressed concerns regarding the destruction of Palmyra
The ruins of the old town is located in a strategic position, between the capital Damascus contested eastern region, the city of Deir al-Zour.

Palmyra is considered an important achievement of ancient civilizations in the Middle East, because it was built with a different style than any other cities of the Roman Empire.

Such as Venice, the city is forming a base for trafficking network. However, the sea in Palmyra is desert, and the boat over there was a camel. Only a fraction of the city's sites which have been excavated. Most of the archaeological remains are still buried under the ground, and too fragile to be extracted.

If the city is destroyed by ISIS, an important chapter history of the Middle East will be lost by this tragic conflict.
